History
|
The First Baptist Church of Eufaula was constituted on June 24, 1837, as the Irwinton Baptist Church. The name of the town was changed from Irwinton to Eufaula in 1843 and consequently the name of the church became the Eufaula Baptist Church. It acquired its third and present title when it was legally changed to the First Baptist Church of Eufaula in 1869.
Space will not allow proper acknowledgement of each of the 34 pastors who have made his unique contribution during the 166-year history of the church. The names, years or service, and photographs of many of the more current pastors now grace the entrance hall near the church office.
Of note, however, is that Dr. M. B. Wharton served as pastor on two different occasions and provided leadership in the building and rebuilding of the church at its present location. A monument was placed in his honor at the intersection of South Randolph and Barbour Streets.
The original church on this site was characterized by its beautiful steeple but was destroyed by the fire caused by lightning in 1907.
Dr. Kenneth W. Bush has served as pastor of the church for over 25 years. A longevity record that was established on September 29, 1997. His ministry exceeded that of the late Reverend C. B. Price.
The church has experienced outstanding growth over the years under the able leadership of Dr. Bush and his staff. Widely accepted programs and activities give evidence of a genuine spirit of cooperation, excitement and commitment.
